British soldiers caged the men of a Palestinian village and allowed each man half a pint of water a day. At least ten of them died. The village was Halhul, near Hebron, in May 1939, during the Palestinian revolt against British rule. The army wanted the village's rifles. Soldiers of the Black Watch rounded up every man in the village and held them in a wire cage in the summer heat. Edward Keith-Roach, the British District Commissioner for Jerusalem, wrote that the ration was half a pint a day, when four pints was the least a man could live on in that heat. The search took one day. The officer who led the soldiers, Captain Neville Blair, later said his brigade commander ordered the men kept in the sun for days more. They were held for more than a week. A man held there told a British doctor in Hebron, Elliot Forster, that the men drank their own urine. One man said a rifle was hidden in a well, so they lowered him to the water. He came up with no rifle, was beaten with rifles, cut the rope, fell back into the well and drowned. British accounts count at least ten dead. Keith-Roach wrote that eleven old men died, and:

Keith-Roach wrote that eleven old men died, and: "I was instructed that no civil inquest should be held." That May, Forster wrote in his diary: "We may yet teach Hitler something new about the conduct of concentration camps." A woman of Halhul said the soldiers threw away the food the women brought, and that a British official told her: "Without guns those men will never be released." The men were freed only when the village handed over forty old rifles. Baynes, The Forgotten Victor (1989). Pictures: Library of Congress, Matson Collection; British Movietone film of a round-up at Ein Karem, December 1938
