WHAT DOES YOUR GOD ASK YOU TO BECOME? Before you tell me that you trust God, tell me: What does your God ask you to become? “In God We Trust” sounds simple enough. Until we ask: Whose God? The God of love—or the god of punishment? The God of truth—or the god who conveniently agrees with you? The God of mercy—or the god of vengeance? The God of creation—or the god of one nation, party, institution or tribe? The God who guides your conscience—or the god used to command someone else’s obedience? Every army claims God. Every empire blesses itself. Opposing sides kneel in prayer before entering the same battle. And somebody always believes they were chosen. But chosen for what? To rule? To conquer? To punish? To accumulate wealth while others go without? Or to accept responsibility for what you have heard, seen and understood? To be chosen is not to be declared better than everyone else. It is not a prize. It is an assignment. You are not chosen above others. You are chosen for something—and held responsible for what you do with it. The call may come through scripture, conscience, intuition, music, art, suffering or another human being who needs your help. Many hear it. The chosen answer. But answering a call does not make every action righteous. The name “God” is not a moral blank cheque. If your god asks you to abandon truth, silence your conscience, deny another person’s humanity or excuse cruelty in exchange for power, perhaps it is not God speaking. Perhaps it is fear. Perhaps it is ambition. Perhaps it is the institution. Perhaps it is you—hearing your own desires returned in a divine voice. No religion, government or nation owns God. God is not our possession. God is our reference point. A God worthy of trust should not make us less human. That God should call us toward truth, responsibility, consent, courage, mercy and justice. Not certainty without humility. Not obedience without conscience. Not power without accountability. The question is not merely whether you believe in God. The question is what your belief produces. Does it make you kinder? More honest? More courageous? More willing to protect the vulnerable? More capable of admitting when you are wrong? More responsible for the choices you make? If not, what exactly are you worshipping? Different names. Different roads. One Sky Over All. The invitation may come from beyond us, but the answer is revealed through us. So before you announce that you have been chosen, ask what you have chosen to become. And before you say, “In God We Trust,” ask whether the life you are living makes that God worthy of anyone else’s trust. By their fruits, you will know them. Not only their God. Them.
