Avoiding control or manipulation starts with knowing your boundaries and trusting yourself. It can happen in friendships, work, family, or relationships, so these work across the board: 1. Know your baseline Get clear on your values: What’s okay with you and what isn’t? When you know that, it’s easier to spot when someone’s pushing you past it. Trust your gut: That uneasy, "something feels off" feeling is data. Don’t ignore it. 2. Spot the common tactics People who try to control/manipulate often use: Guilt trips: "If you really cared you would..." Gaslighting: "That never happened" or "You’re too sensitive" Isolation: "You don’t need them, you have me" Love bombing then withdrawal: intense praise, then coldness to get you to chase it Moving goalposts: no matter what you do, it’s never enough If you see a pattern, name it to yourself. 3. Set and hold boundaries Be direct: "I’m not comfortable with that" or "I need time to think about it" Don’t JADE: Justify, Argue, Defend, Explain too much. Manipulators use your explanations against you. A simple "No" is complete. Follow through: If you say a consequence, follow it. "If you keep yelling, I’m leaving the conversation." 4. Protect your decision-making Slow it down: "Let me get back to you" buys you time away from pressure Check with trusted people: "Hey, does this seem fair to you?" Outside perspective cuts through fog Keep your own info sources: Don’t let one person be your only source of "truth" about a situation 5. Take care of yourself Self-respect practice: Remind yourself you get to have needs and preferences Limit access when needed: Less contact, less info shared, more distance if someone consistently disrespects boundaries Get support: A therapist, mentor, or trusted friend helps you reality-check The goal isn’t to control them back. It’s to stay in control of _you_ — your time, your choices, your peace. #foryoupage #fyp
