I’m an ER nurse and always say ‘in an emergency I would rather be looking at it not looking for it’

Unless her husband is working through that hospital, they will not let him stick here either. Compliance nurse here 🙋🏻♀️

I wish patients understood how anxious it makes me when they refuse IVs. I obviously respect their wishes, but again it’s the security net.

If (everything in) nursing was easy, wouldn’t everyone do it?! Some people just don’t realize

An IV is a lot better than a drill 🤷🏻♀️

What’s scarier than an IV? Having to get one placed when your hemorrhaging, your BP is 60/nada, having no rerun on the IV

It’s also always easier to get an IV on someone with a pulse

I’ve had ER nurses and anesthesiologists have to try over 20 times and then drill IO cuz they couldn’t get an IV during anaphylaxis 😳

You say this so my nicer than I do. Without an IV you and the baby might die. Get the heplock

My husband once needed an IV while having a seizure. It took 4 nurses to get it done. I about passed out. It’s not always easy.

As someone whose had a crash csection, you don’t want them to have to take a time out to place an IV. Every second counts.

The IV was the worst part of my child birth experience, I just learned to insist that the IV be done by their best sticker. I am a hard stick

I’ve seen SO many people that’s gotten IV access in an emergency so I know it’s possible and it’s just what I am comfortable with

I had a horrific time getting an IV w/my last baby, ended up blowing a vein. Wouldn’t wanted to do that in an emergency!

So I hated every IV port once it was not hooked to a bag . I def could still feel the needle on my hand or wrist or arm . And it left me bruised

Time can be the loss of life in an emergency situation. An IV is a must. Emergency situations can go south quickly without an IV site.

It took 4 nurses w/ a vein finder to get my kiddos iv in. We go in monthly for this so they know what veins usually work. It was not quick or easy.

Your husband may start iv in an emergency but it's very different when someone you love is in danger vs work.

Oh no, nobody’s saying it’s easy. But if it’s emergent, there will be access. Whether that’s by an IV or if I have to be drilled 😂

Didn’t really want an IV but it sure was handy when I had a 1.8 litre PPH. 😌

Im just assuming here, but a HCW would not ask for assistance from a spouse, no matter what the emergency is.

It depends on the patient. The only way they got one into my mom was her JUGULAR!!!
2021-11-09 19:54:23

Just get the IV. IIO and jugulars are very painful especially after they have to do it emergently. Trust us!

SusieTheNightNurse :
And during a hemorrhage, there is simply less blood in your veins and your veins start to collapse. An IV is a really simply way to be safer.

My last 2 deliveries I had 2 IVs places as safety nets- I have history of hemorrhaging... so we made sure I was leaving the hospital alive.

This is when my hub fainted. Epidural needle in back, IV blew, they had three nurses poking trying to find a vein so they could finish epidural.

🙄I swear some people. It is better to be ahead of the game than behind the 8 ball in an emergency. The hardest time is during an emergency.
