@butterflyastrophysics: Reply to @hillbillygothic There are people doing research into how to answer these questions, but it’s a very hard problem. #techtok #discourse

the algorithm is showing me critical analysis of the algorithm. by the correlation of our poor self esteem it and I are now friends

One thing to consider- ML is not JUST deep learning. Likely, tiktok uses a “ensemble algorithm”. Some of the feeders to this will be explainable.

my fav anecdote of accidental bias was a self-driving car that learned driving based on proximity to grass. almost crashed when first saw a bridge.

cpg grey did a great video about this, while a individual line can be understood, and clusters general purpose vaguely grasped, the whole is beyond

Wrote my thesis on deep recommendation systems, they generally don't work the way you're describing, so the dangers are subtly different

great video! I do want to say that it is possible to analyze these networks, it's just that engineers care much more about results than understanding

On this topic I can only recommend the art, talks and books by James Bridle, they're a genius when it comes to making these abstract concepts graspabl

of course you can answer these questions. you do an ablation study. you remove one input/component at a time and monitor the results.

I also have this theory that ADHD and other neurodivergent neurotypes get shown videos based on the way they interact with videos.

I think the best way I've seen of describing this is ai (and its associated imitations) don't have morals, they have objectives

They absolutely do watch time, a lot actually. Make a new account and don’t like anything, but pick one type of video to watch longer

putting it another way, we can always ask how often person X will get video Y. but the algorithm can't tell you why they chose that
