it turns an alternating current into a direct current. There is liquid mercury at the bottom acting as a cathode (releases electrons) and carbon anodes that do not release electrons easily. That causes the electrons to flow from the mercury to the carbon but not back. Its kinda like a valve for fluids but just with electrons. Whats so cool abt them is that the Cathode never really degrades, because the vaporized mercury just cools off and drips back into the liquid phase. Thats why they kinda work forever with no maintenance ✨
