1 year ago, I had surgery to diagnose and excise endometriosis. i remember going into surgery a year ago, terrified that they wouldn’t find anything at all. because the idea of waking up with no answer was scarier than being diagnosed with a lifelong disease with no real cure. it makes me sad to think I had gotten to that point. but it also makes sense. the constant back pain, the relentless nerve pain down my legs, the heavy periods, the anxiety, the hospital visits, missing work. it was a lot. at least knowing what’s causing it could take away the burden of always wondering what’s going on with me. the last year has brought on a lot of emotions. I feel so grateful I was able to find a doctor who listened to me, had the finances to afford the $10k surgery bill, and have family who flew down in a heartbeat to take care of me post-op. I’ve felt relief. some pain has gotten better. and other pain is still the same. I’ve also felt a lot of grief this last year. and almost this sense of jealousy for the life I could’ve lived if this wasn’t part of my story. sometimes I wonder what I’d be doing, how life would be, and if I’d feel more “me” if I was in less pain. but something I’ve come back to a lot this year is “how can I use this for good?” not in a toxic positivity way, but in a “I can’t change this, so I might as well use it” way. it took me a while to feel comfortable sharing the details of my health online. but ever since, I’ve gotten so many comments and messages saying it’s helped other people. sometimes I wonder if that was all part of God’s plan all along. being able to use me in this way. #endometriosis #endometriosisawareness
