Brooke Rollins, the president’s nominee to lead the Agriculture Department, pledged at her confirmation hearing Thursday to champion farmers and ranchers while positioning them for the future. “Agriculture is surpassingly important to us as a nation,” she told the Senate Agriculture Committee. “All Americans are important, but the farmer, the worker of the land who feeds all the others, is amongst the most notable.” Mr. Rollins, who was a White House staffer during the first Trump administration, said the agriculture industry was facing one of the most economically challenging moments in its history. She said she would prioritize deploying disaster and economic assistance, investing in rural development programs, strengthening export markets, eliminating regulations, and ensuring nutrition programs are effective and efficient. The nominee acknowledged that President Trump’s plans for mass deportations and tariffs could hurt the industry, but said she would take steps to lessen the impact. “He believes that it is a very important tool in his toolkit to continue to bring America back to the forefront of the world, and to ensure that we have a thriving economy,” she said. “But just as he did and we did in the first administration, he also understands the potential devastating impact to our farmers and our ranchers.” She said USDA will work “to ensure that we can close those holes for our farmers and ranchers moving forward under any sort of tariff execution in the next coming days, in the next few years.” Watch more at c-span.org #agriculture #usda #senate #cspan
