This weekend’s YouTube video revisits a shape you may have already seen me trim. These are devilish miniature objects to make, the lids especially, which I opted to throw on batts so I didn’t have to worry about trying to pry them off neatly. If you’d like to watch the fully narrated video, you can find it via the link in my profile’s biography. When making lidded vessels like this, despite the bodies of the jar’s all being differently shaped, I like to make them with an opening that’s the same diameter, that way I don’t need to individually measure and throw a lid for each piece, instead I throw two dozen that are more or less exactly the same. I only needed 21 lids, but in this instance, I always overproduce just in case I ruin a lid as I’m working. 80% of their shape is completed at this stage, and the final 20% occurs during the trimming the following day, where the angular forms are refined and made crisp and the lid of course is turned to perfectly fit. In regard to the lid, they’re thrown with 70 grams of clay, which is almost half the weight of the bodies, (150 grams). I use more material than need be as it simply makes them easier to throw. When trimmed, the lids will weigh between 20-30 grams a piece, so a lot of clay is carved away, yet, if I tried to throw these with 20-30 grams, I’d have a much harder time and they’d take FAR longer to create. So, by opting to use more clay I can throw them faster and chunkier, then turn them once leather hard to my exact liking. #potteryvideos #howitsmade #wheelthrownpottery #oddlysatisfying #craft #pottery
