Many ways to skin a cat After living and breathing bodybuilding for 8+ years before training for endurance, I’ve come to realise that some of the core basics are the same (this probably extends to many things outside also) The basics, done well, consistently, over a long period of time Outside of that, everyone has their own way of working I found that in bodybuilding, some people swore by a certain approach that got them to where they were vs the opposite of someone else despite being at a similar level Since studying endurance and the people at the top, I’ve found that it’s also true here Outside of the basics I said above, some people have more rigid plans and their own way while others will do the complete opposite and still win races There is always going to be studies of the supposedly ‘right way’ of doing things but sometimes that way doesn’t work for some people We’re human, all the same but slightly different I think this shows the importance of not being afraid to try and fail for yourself You can read as much theory as you like but the biggest lessons you’ll learn is doing yourself What I learnt from doing the IronMan and the first backyard ultra are things people couldn’t have taught me, they had to be experienced I guess the message is, the foundations usually stay the same (training well consistently etc etc) then everyone will have the way that works for them Especially in these multi day races, so much needs to go right to have a good day vs not much going wrong for a bad one because it’s such a long event
