The Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless is clean, responsive, and genuinely satisfying to use. It scratches something in my brain in the best possible way. The low-profile switches are smooth and soft without losing that tactile satisfaction you want from a premium mechanical keyboard. Over the past few weeks — whether I was writing articles, editing late into the night, or gaming between deadlines — it consistently felt comfortable and exciting to use. Most importantly, it passes the real-world test — it doesn’t drive my wife insane with endless late-night click-clacking. That alone deserves recognition. A big part of that (I presume) comes down to Corsair’s low-profile “OPX optical switches”. They’re smooth, responsive, and impressively quiet thanks to a gasket-mounted design and multiple layers of sound dampening. What is gasket mounting, I hear you ask? It basically means the key plate isn’t rigidly screwed into the keyboard case. Instead, it’s cushioned with gasket material, which gives the board a bit of flex and softens the feel (and sound) when you type. Genius. Going from the Corsair K70 PRO to this felt like a genuine wake-up call. The Vanguard Air 99 feels more refined, more modern, and far more pleasant to type on for extended periods. As a writer, I still value having access to a numpad. The em dash shortcut — Alt + 0151 — is permanently burned into my brain, and I refuse to apologise for it. Despite the more compact layout, the keyboard still feels practical and spacious enough for everyday productivity. One slightly odd design decision is the missing right CTRL key, replaced instead with a dedicated Microsoft Copilot button. I’m not exactly desperate for an AI assistant built directly into my keyboard, but it’s easy enough to ignore if you don’t plan on using it. The sculpted aluminium frame gives the keyboard a premium feel without adding unnecessary bulk. Despite the compact layout, it still feels spacious and practical for both work and gaming. It’s also reassuringly heavy for its size, meaning it doesn’t shift around during intense typing (not that I’m an intense typer or anything) or stressful gaming sessions. It has an optional wireless function — both 2.4GHz and Bluetooth connections. The battery is said to last for about 55 with the RGB and LCD screen off. I comfortably used the keyboard across the weekend, lights and screen blaring, without the battery ever fully draining… though I came close. The vibrant 1.9 inch LCD screen is easily Vanguard Air’s standout feature, giving users room for custom animations, shortcuts, and system information. It does it all without feeling super gimmicky. While gaming, something as simple as an animated clock on the keyboard kept me from overdoing late-night gaming sessions. To customise the keyboard, you’ll need to use Corsair iCUE. This is where you’ll update firmware, tweak RGB lighting, configure the display, and customise the programmable S buttons. Getting started wasn’t completely seamless, though. Corsair’s product firmware can be updated through a web browser. How about that? Updating the keyboard and dongle firmware turned into a bit of a process involving PC restarts, unplugging dongles, and swapping USB-C cables before everything finally behaved properly. Once it was working, however, the experience became much smoother. After setup, customising the keyboard was quick and intuitive. Within minutes, I had shortcuts set up to launch the Quest Daily website and my latest obsession, Vampire Crawlers, with a single button press.
