There were nine of them.. Nine Belgian draft horses standing there waiting for the same fate that thousands before them have faced. I pulled five. Not because we had the money. Not because they were fundraised. Not because we had some grand plan. I pulled them because I looked into their eyes and couldn’t walk away. Honestly… what was I supposed to do? Stand there and watch them load? Pretend I didn’t see them? Tell myself someone else would help? I’d be lying to myself because there is quite literally no one else. I can’t do that. These horses didn’t ask to be here. Humans bred them. Humans used them. They plowed fields so families could eat. They hauled equipment. They worked until their bodies couldn’t work anymore. Then many are discarded like yesterday’s trash. No retirement. No thank you. No reward for a lifetime of service. Just a one-way trip. As I stood there looking at them, I kept thinking about something from my childhood. When I was a little girl living with my dad in Pennsylvania, we stopped at an Amish farm. I remember seeing the draft horses and wanting so badly to pet them. I was told they weren’t pets. I’ll never forget it. At the time, I didn’t understand. Today, standing in front of these nine Belgians, I understood all too well. Maybe that’s why this one hit me so hard. These horses aren’t machines. They aren’t equipment. They aren’t disposable. They are living, breathing souls who have spent their entire lives serving people. Now they need someone willing to show up for them. Five are safe tonight. Five have a chance because this community exists. Now we have to fight for them. If they speak to your heart too, hopefully scream into your heart, help us show them that their story doesn’t end here. Let’s give them the retirement they never got!
