Thermal pads are only about 60% efficient while thermal PASTE is about somewhere in the high 90's.

thermal pads for CPU's are only good for when you are running a test bench or another thing where you have to take off the cooler often

Yes, paste is better. BUT, the pad can't dry out. That's why I use them when I build for people I know probably won't do that kinda maintenance.

Linus tech tips try that out he does not recommend it because it does not keep your CPU cool for long periods of time. Thermal paste or liquid metal

I think everyone is forgetting the fact the thermal place is only to smooth out the top of your cpu for better coverage against the cooler
