Have you ever experienced -mood swings -cravings -headaches/migraines -breast tenderness -cramping -heavy flow around or during your period? What about hot flashes or mood swings going through menopause? Do you gain weight around your hips, thighs, and glutes? For men and women, what about low libido or painful sex? These are all super common symptoms of hormone imbalances that are very much generally accepted as “normal,” but are NOT at all normal! So what causes these? The biggest contributing factor is stress, inside and outside of the body. Stress has such a downstream effect on so many things, hormones included. Ingesting and/or putting things topically on our body that disrupt our hormone system can also have a huge impact on our hormonal balance. Lastly, although almost most importantly, congestion or suboptimal work of our liver is a major factor to hormone imbalances. When our liver is overburdened, it can’t do one of its many jobs of breaking down and filtering out excess hormones. Whether that’s high cortisol levels (from stress), high levels of endocrine disruptors, and/or one of the many other factors that impacts the liver’s ability to function optimally, the liver is super important when it comes to hormone imbalances. One of the biggest impacts I see is women trying to come off of birth control (of any form) and having a really hard time getting back to a normal cycle and/or avoiding many of the symptoms that come along with hormonal imbalances like acne, cramping, bloating, pain, headaches/migraines, etc. So how do we address hormonal imbalances? 1. Reduce stress- this goes such a long way! 2. Support the liver- food, supplements, and/or lifestyle changes go a long way 3. Support the adrenals (especially when it comes to menopause)- this also goes hand in hand with stress. 4. Try seed cycling- for menstruating women, seed cycle is simple and very effective in helping the body balance estrogen and progesterone 5. Slowly swap out endocrine disrupting products- you don’t have to do this all at once! 6. Switch to filtered (quality filtered)/distilled water 7. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods and getting enough calories (and a balance of macronutrients) #womenshealth #hormonesupport #midlifewomen
