I have never seen a Luna moth- have you? While they are not rare, they are rarely seen by humans. Perhaps you have seen one of these mystical creatures on a nighttime walk in the woods- if so, how lucky and lovely! Luna moths are giant silk moths, very beautiful, and named after the Latin word for moon, “Luna”. I believe they are only in North America, primarily among deciduous forest trees. One of the trees Luna moths like are Sweetgum trees (called Liquidambar or Liquid Amber trees here on the west coast). I have a cluster of three huge liquidambar trees in front of my house, and I love their star-shaped leaves. So while we don’t have Luna moths here in Southern California, I can pair them with a leaf in my imagination (and on this ceramic dish!) Luna moths symbolize transformation, new beginnings, and rebirth. Luna moths remind us to look for the light, whether that light is hope or truth or change or knowledge. To create this handmade ceramic jewelry dish, I start with pressing a star-shaped leaf into soft stoneware clay. The leaf imprint captures the delicate vein patterns of the leaf. Then I add a sculpture of a Luna moth to the dish. (Here it looks like I just place it, but I will actually use slip and scoring methods to join the moth to the dish as one piece.) I dry the piece very slowly and then fire it in my pottery kiln to firm the clay (this is the bisque firing). After adding color to the piece (using stains and Underglaze), I coat the piece in a ceramic glaze and fire it again, this time to a much higher temperature which melts the glaze into a glassy and glossy finish. Real gold accents are hand painted onto the moth and rim of the dish and the piece is fired again to melt and bond the gold to the piece. #lunamoth #magical #pottery #natureart #sculpture
