Before bailing Beau, I contacted my vet and our surgeon to discuss his issues. We knew we didn’t want to leave him there, but we wanted to make sure that it was safe for him to trailer to Vermont with us. If it wasn’t safe, we would have brought him to a local vet to be humanely euthanized. Our surgeon said that it looked more like a birth defect or injury that happened around birth, and while it looks uncomfortable, it is all he’s probably ever known and he had a tolerance to that leg pain and inabilities. So he was deemed safe to ship to us. He did great the entire trailer ride and even now at home he seems very comfortable on it. But, we needed to x-ray that leg to see what was happening internally. And what we found truly shocked all of us. Whomever had Beau before us, had paid to have an extreme surgical procedure on him. When we saw the screw in his leg, we all gasped. Judging by the condition of his other joints, we think that Beau was born premature and most likely started running around on these joints before they were ready for that kind of pressure. This causes the joints to break and crunch on top of each other. His right front got it the worst, and the deterioration from the crunching was most severe on the far right of the joint, which caused his leg to start turning. Our surgeon thinks that the previous owner’s vet attempted to place a transphyseal screw to limit growth on that leg, which was a pretty good idea but it didn’t work. What absolutely blows my mind is that these previous owners probably paid thousands and thousands of dollars for this procedure, and when it failed, instead of humanely euthanizing him, they sent him to an auction with his leg going the wrong way. It truly disgusts me in a way that enrages me. He is only 8-9 months old. And this is what his life has been. How. HOW is this legal?! We are still deciding on what the next steps are and to be completely honest, what will most likely happen is that we will give him the best life we possibly can, until his body tells us it's time. To read exactly what our surgeon said and to see the possible treatments, which include breaking his bones, you can read all of those on our patreon and instagram subscription page. #horserescue #animalrescue #rescueanimals #savedfromslaughter #theyneedourhelp #horsesanctuary #help
