If I’m honest there were many times I questioned how much I wanted to be a doctor… often times the sacrifice, stress, emotional and physical hardships were overwhelming…. But reflecting on the end goal and the future reward of serving and caring for my patients helped me to make it through. Now as I am a doctor there are still times that are hard but reflecting on the magic moments at the bedside you have with your patients will make the bad moments seem meaningless. Reflect on and cherish the good moments. If you are struggling never be afraid to ask for help. It is ok to not be ok. Something I do is keep a journal of all the impactful patient encounters I have had and read through it on my hard days! This helped me focus on the positive and not the negative. Hang in there, you are making a difference, you matter, and medicine is part of your life not your life! In the end if you calculate the cost and it’s not worth it to you find something that is! For me, being a physician is worth it and I love my career, even on the hard days.
