You probably know how everyone talks about stress, trauma, and its effects on the body, especially the high levels of cortisol? Well, what most people don't realize is that chronic stress, especially if you've experienced trauma in childhood, can actually impact your body's stress response system. It's called the HPA axis, and it's like your body's built-in stress manager. But when you've been through a lot of stress or trauma, this system can get out of balance. Many people actually live, therefore, with low cortisol production instead of high cortisol production due to childhood trauma and prolonged stress, particularly during their formative years. When the HPA axis isn't working right, it can lead to low levels of cortisol, which is the hormone that helps you deal with stress. And let me tell you, having low cortisol levels can really affect you. Imagine you're an adult, and you're trying to deal with the stresses of everyday life—work, relationships, bills, you name it. As a normal response to stress, your body would release cortisol, but due to the imbalanced HPA Axis, it fails to do that, which means you are much more sensitive to stress. This dysregulation persists into adulthood, causing ongoing low cortisol production. Consequently, individuals may struggle to mount an adequate stress response, making them more sensitive to stressors and less able to cope with everyday challenges. But because of the low cortisol production from your childhood trauma, you find it hard to cope. You might feel tired all the time, struggle to control your emotions, and have difficulty sleeping. Your body and mind just don't respond the way they should, making it even harder to handle the challenges life throws your way. So, if you've been through a lot of stress or trauma, it's important to know that it can have a real impact on your body but is also very individual. #cortisol #stress #trauma #ptsd #cptsd #childhoodtrauma #traumasurvivor #MentalHealth #fyp #mindbody
