Volley Serve where you hit the ball before it bounces and the drop serve, when you let the ball bounce once before hitting it. No matter which you use, the key is to release the ball the exact same way, every time. Here’s why that matters: If your release is inconsistent, then your contact point, timing, and swing path will all be inconsistent too, and that makes it impossible to know why your serve is working, or not. My preferred method is the volley serve. But not with a toss, because tossing the ball adds too many variables. Instead, I simply hold the ball out in front of me, gently let it fall out of my hand, and make contact as it drops. Clean and repeatable Unlike tennis, there’s no real benefit to tossing the ball high in pickleball, so don’t overcomplicate it. The smaller and more controlled the motion, the easier it is to repeat.
