8 POSITIONS THAT MAY HELP YOU RELAX You: Coach, I’m stressed, tense and mentally overwhelmed. Can these simple positions really help? Healthy Living Coach: They can. Gentle movement, stretching, comfortable positions and slow breathing may help reduce physical tension and promote relaxation. They are stress-management tools, not a replacement for professional care when stress or anxiety is severe or persistent. 1. CHILD’S POSE This supported position allows the back, shoulders and hips to relax. It also gives you a quiet moment to slow your breathing and turn your attention away from stressful thoughts. Don’t force the stretch; stay where you feel comfortable. Try: 30–60 seconds of slow breathing. 2. CAT-COW STRETCH Stress can make you unconsciously tighten your neck, shoulders and back. Cat-Cow gently moves the spine and helps release stiffness while bringing awareness to your body. Coordinating movement with breathing can also give your mind something calm to focus on. Try: 5–10 slow cycles. 3. SEATED FORWARD FOLD This gently stretches the back of the body, including the hamstrings and back muscles. More importantly, it creates a pause from constant activity, allowing you to focus on your breathing and body sensations. You do NOT need to touch your toes. Never force the movement. Try: 20–60 seconds comfortably. 4. LEGS UP THE WALL This is a supported position requiring very little muscular effort. It can feel especially relaxing after prolonged standing or walking. Lying still while breathing slowly gives you a chance to step away from physical and mental activity. Try: 5–10 minutes if comfortable. It’s better described as a relaxation position than a guaranteed “nervous-system reset.” 5. SUPINE TWIST A gentle twist can mobilize the spine and stretch muscles around the back, hips and torso. Moving slowly while breathing can help you notice and release physical tension and shift your attention toward the present moment. Try: 20–30 seconds on each side. 6. DEEP BREATHING Never underestimate your breathing. Stress can make breathing faster or shallower. Slow, comfortable breathing can encourage relaxation and reduce some physical stress symptoms. You don’t need to take huge breaths. Slow and comfortable is more important. Try: 5–10 slow breaths, focusing on each inhale and exhale. 7. HUG YOURSELF This is a simple self-comfort practice. Crossing your arms around yourself creates a moment to pause, breathe and acknowledge what you’re feeling. It can be a reminder to slow down and care for yourself. Try: Hold gently while taking several slow breaths. 8. HAPPY BABY POSE This gentle position stretches the hips, inner thighs and lower back. If you sit for long periods, it can feel especially good. Let your hips relax naturally and never pull aggressively on your feet. Try: 20–60 seconds while breathing slowly. You: Do I need all eight every day? Healthy Living Coach: No. Choose 2–4 positions that feel comfortable and spend about 10–15 minutes practicing them. And remember: stress relief is not only about exercise. Sleep, physical activity, relationships, workload, nutrition and time for relaxation all matter. Start with 5 minutes. Breathe slowly. Move gently. Listen to your body.
