I’m the peds ER this works when modeled. I ask them to look at me and take 3 breaths with me. They almost immediately calm down and focus.

For Jonah, “deep breath” is the only thing that instantly starts calming him down. For Carter, hardly works unless I “squeeze” his breaths out 😂

Except that it works for my son…although I don’t just tell him to do it, I sit with him to do it together.

Everyone here needs to read The Rabbit Is Listening! Sometimes we don't want someone to fix our sad feelings, but to just be there and listen.

I disagree a little. It all depends on how you say it and in which situations.😏

So let me guess, your advice is to let them “feel” their feelings?

I accidentally did this with "take a break". To her it means "stop doing what you're doing" and/or "mommy is stressed out". So we say take 5 now

It could be the way they say it too. When my son is frustrated I acknowledge that he’s feeling frustrated&say. Let’s take a deep breath and try again

Oh no 🥺 I often say to my kids "let's take some deep breaths, how can I help?" now I'm worried I'm invalidating their emotions

I think if you’re gonna give advice on what not to do, you should have advice ready on what TO do. Leaving your audience is off-putting

Okay but what about modeling and continuing to validate their feelings while practicing breathing TOGETHER

I model the deep breathing when my kids are overwhelmed. They seem to follow my lead and calm down without me telling them to do anything.

Right but like what should one do?! Cuz if we even speak during a meltdown causes more screaming and crying….

Give a gentle hug and back rub, the child will take a big breath and calm down on its own.

It depends... If you have worked on self-regulation strategies with the child prior to the escalation then asking them to take a breath in 1/2
