IBS is the most commonly diagnosed gut condition these days? Don’t settle for that! IBS is much like fibromyalgia, another “garbage can” diagnosis that ignores what’s really happening in the body. For instance, about 85% of IBS diagnoses are actually SIBO --- small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. SIBO happens when bacteria from the large intestine translocate to the small intestine, causing myriad gut symptoms, the most common being chronic diarrhea, constipation, or both. Many times, gut problems are related to a food intolerance, such as to gluten, dairy, food additives, processed foods, and sugars and sweeteners. Many people resolve their gut health problems by doing an “inflammatory reset,” which allows the gut’s immune system and lining to heal. You can learn more in my free Inflammatory Reset guide >> link in bio. Things like low stomach hydrochloric acid from an H. pylori infection (the most common bacterial infection globally) can create digestive problems throughout the rest of the GI tract. The same goes with gallstones or gallbladder sludge, which we commonly see in our female patients, and digestive enzyme deficiency from poor pancreatic function, a common side effect of sugary, high-carb diets. The more complex gut issues may have an underlying autoimmune mechanism, such as parietal cell or intrinsic factor autoimmunity in the stomach, tropomyosin autoimmunity, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and celiac disease. This is a deep, broad, and complex topic and I apologize in advance that I will not be able to answer your gut health questions. If you’re like most Americans, you’re suffering from some type of chronic gut complaint. But if you’re diagnosed with IBS and sent on your way, just know you need to keep digging to find your unique underlying mechanism. #ibs #guthealth #functionalmedicine #ibstiktok
