🔥 10 Things That Make a Great Tattoo 1. Strong composition – Everything should flow with the shape of the body and placement. 2. Good contrast – A tattoo needs clear light, mid-tone and dark values so it doesn’t become one grey blob. 3. Readable design – You should be able to understand what the tattoo is from a distance, not only when you’re 10 cm away. 4. Clean linework – Lines should be deliberate, consistent and appropriate for the style. 5. Smooth shading – Good transitions between dark and light create depth and realism. 6. Proper proportions – Even the smallest anatomical or structural mistakes can make a tattoo look strange. 7. Good reference material – A quality tattoo starts with quality references. The better the reference, the more potential the final tattoo has. 8. Correct placement – The design should complement the body’s anatomy rather than simply being placed wherever there’s space. 9. Negative space – Skin isn’t empty space; it’s part of the design. Proper breathing room keeps the tattoo readable as it ages. 10. Longevity – A great tattoo isn’t just impressive on day one. It should be designed to heal well and remain readable years later. The big one: a good tattoo isn’t necessarily the most detailed tattoo. It’s a tattoo where composition, contrast, readability and longevity all work together.
