We sat on our battered little couch, the one that groaned under even the slightest shift, as if it were protesting its miserable fate. Penny, in his stretched-out T-shirt with an unmistakable soy sauce stain (don’t ask), was, as usual, attempting to butcher my playlist. He belted out a few lines in such hilariously off-key harmony that I doubled over laughing and accidentally elbowed him. “Hey, are you trying to kill me?” he mock-protested, grabbing my shoulders. It was typical us: reckless, silly, completely ours. In that moment, I twisted away, and as if on cue, we tumbled off the couch like a pair of circus clowns, landing in a pile of scattered clothes and boxes. There was a loud thud, uncontrollable laughter, and that strange sense that somehow, this chaos captured us perfectly. “Should I finally clean this up?” Penny glanced at the mess, then immediately clutched his head in mock despair. “Kidding. Totally kidding.” I grabbed his hand. “No, don’t. Let it stay. Let the chaos be.” He nodded, suddenly serious. “Teeny… if this is chaos, it’s the most beautiful kind I’ve ever seen.” Our faces were so close I could feel the warmth of his breath, the faint citrus scent of the mandarins we’d just devoured straight from the netted bag. And then, like in the worst rom-com, the door swung open. Our neighbor stood there, holding a bundle of misdelivered mail. We froze, tangled together on the floor, surrounded by pure, unfiltered mayhem. A beat passed. Then we burst out laughing, loud and unapologetic. The neighbor dropped the letters on the floor without a word and left, shaking her head…💙🤍
