This is the view I see in my mirror whilst working. It isn’t there for vanities sake, instead it’s a tool that allows me to see the sideview of the pot I’m throwing or trimming. Without one, from above I can only see the pot from a slightly distorted angle. It can be difficult to see the shape of the pot and its proportions. You can of course lean backwards awkwardly while straddling the wheel or even get up, take a few steps back and crouch down, or, you can simply place a mirror in front of you like this. With one in place all you need do to see a perfect sideview is just glance upwards — that’s it. I’ve been using a mirror like this to make pots since college, when I began my training on the DCCoI Ceramics Skills & Design Training Course, which is currently on a hiatus as it restructures, so I hear, and since then, together with a throwing gauge, without them I almost feel a little lost. The white inclusion you’ll see spinning around is a lump of porcelain poorly wedged into the larger mass of clay. Once fired and glazed you’ll barely be able to notice it. #pottery #howto #craft #mirror #studiopottery
