This is the damaged fuselage & the Daimler-Benz DB 601-A Engine from a Messerschmitt Bf 110E flown by Rudolf Hess on the night of 10 May 1941. Hess completed extensive training with the chief test pilot at Messerschmitt in anticipation of his mission to Scotland. After logging many long-haul flights in different Bf-110Es, he selected this specific aircraft. As the Second World War progressed and a Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union was planned for June 1941, Rudolf Hess became concerned that Germany would struggle to fight a war on two fronts. On 10 May 1941, Rudolf Hess attempted a solo secret mission to negotiate peace between Britain and Nazi Germany. Hess mistakenly assumed that the Duke of Hamilton, whose estate he planned to land on, was a prominent member of an anti-war faction in Britain. Hess believed that they could negotiate a peace deal that would permit Britain to keep its overseas territories in exchange for Germany's uncontested control of continental Europe. Hess's aircraft was first detected by a radar station near Newcastle-upon-Tyne at about 10pm. Within minutes, at least three Spitfires were sent to intercept the aircraft, but could not locate it in the dark. As Hess flew over Scotland, his aircraft was then spotted by Royal Observer Corps posts, who reported it flying as low as 50 feet. After failing to locate his destination and running low on fuel, Hess bailed out and his aircraft crashed. He was arrested and imprisoned in Britain for the remainder of the war. In 1946, Hess was convicted for war crimes in the Nuremberg Trials and transferred to Spandau Prison in Berlin. He remained there until his death in 1987. #shorts #planecrash #militaryaviation #avgeek #aviationhistory
