isaac :
my favorite way to think about is is normal dark is the lack of light, where opaque darkness is a void from light

Tejo :
I treat it as opaque, mainly because if you cast darkness in an open field at daytime people would have disadvantage on attacking people inside 1/?

Ty :
Opaque is easier to imagine but darkness parallels the light cantrip so much that I think of it as an anti-light, casting darkness on its surroundings

The_True_Stav :
The fact it can't be illuminated by non-magical light implies that light cannot exist within it, so I treat it as Opaque

Well, then everything inside would be seen as shadows against the background, diminishing the purpose of the spell

Dr. Dreams :
I think the reason why it’s seen as opaque is because non magical light can’t pass through the zone so therefore it’s a black void unless it’s magic

but then if the whole chamber is otherwise lit you would see silhouettes and the point of the darkness spell would be gone

I think the opaque idea comes from the globe. Say you drop it in the middle of a lit room. If it’s not opaque then I can see things on the other side

I treat it as opaque because otherwise you could still see out of it/where you're going/and attack through it

I think im going to homebrew it so the caster can choose whether its opaque or you can see out of it, tactically interesting 😁

Do note it's a property of the specific spell. The Darkness spell explicitly states darkvision doesn't work, while Shadow of Moil does not.

Ross Monasweebro :
if it was nonopaque then an object would still cast a shadow from a lightsource outside the area of darkness blocking, without being lit by, the light

I see it as normal darkness us a glass of water in the dark. magical darkness as a glass of water dyed to be black

isn't the light passing through to be visible from the other side essentially illumination?

I imagine that magical darkness sucks all light that passes through it like a black hole.

I basically treat it as an aoe of blindness that basically just makes it so you can’t detect light.
