The world’s first out gay imam has been shot d**d in South Africa. On Saturday 15 February, 57-year-old Muhsin Hendricks, who ran a mosque intended as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ Muslims, was k***ed after the car in which he was travelling near the southern city of Gqeberha was ambushed. Reports suggest that he was killed after officiating a lesbian wedding, though this is yet to be confirmed. In a statement, the Eastern Cape police said: "Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle." “Thereafter they fled the scene, and the driver noticed that Hendricks, who was seated at the back of the vehicle, was shot and k***ed”. The police added that “the motive for the m***er is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation”. Hedricks was 29 when he came out to his mother as gay in 1996. Prior to that he had married a woman, had children, and divorced. Soon after coming out, he founded The Inner Circle, a human rights organisation which helps “muslims who are queer to reconcile Islam with their sexuality”. In 2011, he set up the Masjidul Ghurbaah mosque at Wynberg near his birthplace in Cape Town. On its website, the mosque describes itself as “as safe space in which queer muslims and marginalised women can practise Islam”. Julia Ehrt, executive director at the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) urged the authorities to investigate “what we fear may be a hate crime”. #imam #muslim #gay #southafrica #crime #lgbtqia
