Every summer, we receive at least a few calls about hermit crabs. This one definitely made me angry. A beachgoer in Belmar recently noticed two young people walking around with a hermit crab. After watching them head toward the ocean, they stopped to ask what they were doing. The kids explained that they had just purchased the hermit crab from a local gift shop, but their parents wouldn’t let them keep it. The store refused to take it back, so they decided they were going to “set him free” in the ocean. Thankfully, someone stepped in. The beachgoer explained that releasing this hermit crab into the Atlantic wouldn’t save his life—it would guarantee his death. After learning this, the kids willingly handed the hermit crab over. The beachgoer immediately contacted us for help. The good news is that he’s doing fairly well. He is overdue for a larger shell, but otherwise appears to be in decent condition. This little guy is a Purple Pincher Hermit Crab. They are native to tropical coastal regions such as the Caribbean and require warm temperatures, high humidity, access to both fresh and salt water, and deep substrate to burrow. They cannot survive in New Jersey’s ocean or climate. Sadly, nearly all Purple Pincher Hermit Crabs sold in souvenir shops and pet stores are wild-caught. They are removed from their natural habitat and sold as inexpensive “easy pets,” but they actually have very specialized care requirements and can live for decades when properly cared for. If you ever find yourself unable to care for a pet, please don’t release it into the wild. Whether it’s a hermit crab, rabbit, turtle, fish, or any other species, releasing non-native animals is rarely a humane option and can also harm local ecosystems. Reach out to a rescue, shelter, or experienced keeper for help instead. We’re now looking for an experienced home where this little crab can eventually be introduced to other hermit crab companions and receive the care he deserves. If you’re interested in adopting and have appropriate hermit crab experience, send us a message! #hermitcrab #hermitcrabs #hermitcrabsofinstagram #animalrescue #souvenir
