🐮 Cow Hide Prep – Day 1 🧂 I knew the minute I asked the butcher to save my cow’s hide for me I’d have to just dig in and fully embrace this new adventure of learning how to prep and later tan a cow hide from our own farm-raised beef. This is my personal journey, not a tutorial, and I’m embracing every misstep along the way. I got the hide back early evening and began fleshing it, removing remaining meat and fat, until the rain rolled in. I decided to keep the hide last minute and my draw knife wasn’t delivered until a few days later, so I used a knife - didn’t think to use a pressure washer as I’ve since seen people do. I was also working against hot, humid SC weather, so to preserve the progress, I applied a coat of non-iodized salt to keep the hide safe overnight. Tomorrow, I’ll pick it up again and continue fleshing before diving into the rest of the hide tanning process. I’m grateful no part of our sweet cow is going to waste… this beautiful cowhide will be a lasting keepsake, and this new homesteading skill is one I’ll be able to use with future hides (after all, it is deer season)! @freedomforestfarm #cowhide #hidetanning #hidepreservation #homestead
