Tom is a feral colony cat that I’ve fed for the last 6 years, and I got him neutered in 2023. Every spring, it’s common for him to look like a raggedy hot mess as he loses his glorious winter coat… but this year was different. This year when he shed his mats, I could finally see his body underneath… and it was entirely emaciated. Tom is my most reliable dinner customer who never misses a meal, so there was absolutely no reason for him to be underweight unless something was incredibly wrong. I’ve lost many ferals and pets in the last 12 months, and I’ve been so hesitant to get my hopes up again when a situation seems dire. But the comprehensive bloodwork confirmed that Tom has a severe case of hyperthyroidism. Without treatment, he will not survive. We have him started on daily pills that get added to his meals. But we’re also on the schedule for the magical radioactive iodine injection treatment - scheduled for the soonest possible appt in July. Tom is currently decompressing in his kennel, getting used to the meds, meals, and indoor setting.
