1. ADAPT QUICKLY If I were new in the UAE today, the first thing I would do is accept that life won’t be perfect from day one and the environment isn’t the same as where I came from. Instead of complaining about every challenge, I would focus on adapting as quickly as possible. Different country, different culture, different way of doing things. For example, as someone with food neophobia, I would explore new cuisines to save money instead of eating the pricey foods I’m used to. One thing I’ve learned is that the sooner you stop resisting change, the sooner you start growing. 2. INVEST IN MYSELF Investing in yourself doesn’t simply mean eating what you always crave or buying the best clothes. I understand some people want to live the YOLO life, but not everyone is the same so I understand this might not be for everyone. But one thing I would do differently is make myself the first investment. I’d invest in learning new skills, improving my qualifications, and building multiple income opportunities, if possible, before putting money into big investments back home. And here is the part where most people get me wrong: investing back home is a good thing, but you need to understand that some projects and investments may take time to pay off, and with a small salary, it will take even longer. The better you become, the more money you’ll have to invest later. A strong foundation makes everything else easier. 3. SET FINANCIAL BOUNDARIES Setting financial boundaries when it comes to family and friends doesn’t mean you’re a wicked person. It simply means you care about your future, and if those people also care, they will understand. I would still help when I can. But being the one who sacrifices their future trying to rescue everyone else is definitely something I would forcefully eliminate from my mind. Remember, everyone else will still be fine even if you don’t have the money to give. When you’re financially secure and stable, you can help people more effectively and properly. 4. NETWORK Now, when we talk about networking, people start saying they’re introverts and don’t even have the time to go out. But networking doesn’t have to mean meeting people in person. As someone you’ll hardly find outside, if I were to start over, I’d treat networking like a dating app. I would find people on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and especially LinkedIn who are doing well or are in a field where I want to see myself. I’d tell them how I aspire to be like them, ask them questions about how they got there, and learn a few things from them. I would make it a goal to meet and connect with new people not because I need favors, but because opportunities often come through people who know your character and personality. At this point, we all know in the UAE, “who you know” can become one of your greatest assets. 5. PRIORITIZING MY MENTAL HEALTH This is a part most people don’t take seriously and do not know that’s what affects their decision making. Nobody prepares you for how lonely starting over and having no life aside working can feel. When you travel abroad, everyone focuses on getting a job, making money and being successful. The pressure, the moments you question your decisions, the loneliness you can be surrounded by thousands of people and still feel alone. If I was new in the UAE, I would intentionally build friendships or find communities that could potentially be a support system. I would take resting seriously and keep an athletic lifestyle to maintain a healthy body and mind. Because making money is important but loosing yourself chasing it is a price too high to pay.
