MARCOS URGES LGUs TO INTENSIFY EFFORTS AGAINST ILLEGAL POGOs President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on local government units (LGUs) to remain vigilant in combating illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), stressing the importance of heightened surveillance and prompt action. The President made the appeal during the 2nd Joint National Peace and Order Council (NPOC)-Regional Peace and Order Councils (RPOCs) meeting for 2024 at Camp Crame in Quezon City. In a social media post on Thursday, December 12, Marcos revealed that he had instructed key agencies, including the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the Philippine Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), to intensify their operations against illegal POGOs and Internet Gaming Licensees (IGLs).
"Inatasan natin ang PAGCOR, PAOCC, PNP at CIDG na paigtingin ang kanilang operasyon laban sa mga ilegal na POGO at IGL operations sa ating bansa," Marcos said. The President also urged LGUs to actively monitor and address suspicious activities in their respective areas. "Sa mga LGU, huwag nating kalimutan ang ating tungkulin na alamin kung ano ang nangyayari sa ating mga komunidad. Makipag-ugnayan sa DILG at huwag na tayong magbulag-bulagan," he added. In his 3rd State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July, Marcos announced a ban on all POGOs—both legitimate and illegal—due to serious issues such as human trafficking, prostitution, abduction, and murder tied to the industry. Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla had earlier stated that he would issue a memorandum requiring local chief executives to closely monitor and report any suspicious POGO-related activities.
