When you see her hiss at us in a close-up moment, it is not aggression, it is communication. Cheetahs like Lexi use hissing as a warning: “Respect my space.” In the wild, this behavior helps avoid physical conflict. It is energy-efficient and smart. Unlike lions, cheetahs are not built for fighting, they are built for speed. Protecting themselves without injury is crucial to survival. Because Lexi lost her mom so young, she did not have the full opportunity to learn every wild lesson from her. That’s why maintaining her semi-wild nature is so important. We do not want her to see humans as companions. We want her to remain what she is, a cheetah. At Felidae, our goal is not to tame wildlife. It is to provide a safe environment where rescued animals can live with dignity, express natural behaviors, and stay as wild as possible under human protection.
