Update from Auntie   It’s been a couple of months, so I wanted to give a short update on our favorite wild child.   Sadie greeted me with the same bright eyes and a big smile as always, only with fewer words. I heard my name maybe twice over the weekend and only when prompted. But as evidenced in this video, Sadie still has her sense of humor and thinks poop is funny like most typical seven-year-olds.   It’s hard to believe Sadie’s vocabulary has declined to almost nothing in just a few months. We used to track all the words she knew but stopped when it got into the hundreds. I’m grateful that Sadie ever learned as much as she did, but I wonder if it makes the regression even more painful because we saw her potential and all she had to lose.   I used to think that Sadie might be a singer if she got the chance to grow up because she’s always loved singing. Sadly, she doesn’t remember the words to most of her favorite songs anymore. Music typically stays with dementia patients the longest, so it’s sad to see even that fade away.    However, Sadie’s words have been replaced with happy squeals, which is a comfort. Also, she’s no longer having the heartbreaking crying spells that she was a month ago, which is a relief to us all.   Sadie understands more than she can vocalize, though. When I told her I had to go back home, she was unusually quiet and seemed sad.   But I told her I’ll see her again soon for Sadiepalooza (just over two weeks from now)! We’re excited to see many of you there, too. We’ve heard from a few people who have seen Sadie in person that they’re surprised about how much she’s struggling with Sanfilippo Syndrome. I know it’s hard to see where Sadie is in our short clips, but we hope these updates provide a clearer picture.   Oh, and Sadie only broke one pair of sunglasses during my visit! 😎 #sanfilipposyndrome #childhooddementia
