Getting held up at gunpoint was not on my itinerary… It didn’t happen here ☝️ (I LOVE Italy!) but somehow, I can’t find a single video from the setting of today’s story: Valparaíso, Chile. It was June 2018. Week one of a month-long solo stay in this colorful seaside city - and something I never thought would happen to me did. It was 3 PM. Bright sun, cobblestone hills, and I was on my way to a café with my backpack - laptop, camera, everything I owned and needed inside. I took a shortcut: a narrow alleyway leading downhill. Coming toward me were three teenagers: a girl holding a Mother’s Day balloon and two boys. No older than 18, if I had to guess. I got that gut feeling. You know the one. I ignored it. One of the boys stepped in front of me, revealing a gun pointed at my stomach, and while the other stood at my side, boxing me in. I froze. I couldn’t understand what he said. Oddly, my reaction was to clutch my backpack tighter. His friend started tugging at it, trying to pull it off me. Then, out of nowhere, a man leaned out of an apartment window above us and started shouting in Spanish. The boys panicked. After a few moments of hesitation, they ran. They didn’t hurt me. They didn’t get anything. But I was rattled. And honestly? I got so lucky. This was the scariest moment I’ve ever had while traveling. But I’ve been to 66 countries (many of them solo), and this is one of only a handful of bad experiences. We can talk about my birthday kidnapping on Koh Samui or the time I almost took a ride with the current over the edge of Victoria Falls on another day.😅😂 I’m not sharing this to scare anyone - I share it because awareness is everything. It didn’t stop me from traveling - but it did make me more prepared. (First thing I did? Ran to a cafe and bought travel insurance - no joke.) What’s something totally unhinged or unexpected that’s happened to you while traveling?👇 Would love to hear it! #Unhinged #TravelStories #SoloTravel #solofemaletravel #TravelFails #TravelLife #SoloTravelStories #TravelSafety #offthebeatenpath
