![BLOEMFONTEIN – In a major breakthrough following an intense gathering of information by Crime Intelligence and investigation on allegations of fraud and corruption within the Department of Labour, the police in the Free State executed a takedown operation today in Bloemfontein, Bethlehem and Gauteng. Members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, operationalised Intelligence driven information as supported by Crime Intelligence, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), Public Order Police, and the Mounted Unit, the starting point was at the Labour House in the Bloemfontein CBD where arrest of one of the first person of interest took place. This comes after months of meticulous investigation into a sophisticated scam involving the fraudulent claims of Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) payments. It is alleged that the masterminds behind this operation recruited unsuspecting individuals and used their personal information to register fictitious companies, which in turn submitted false claims to the Department of Labour. The fraudulently obtained funds would then be shared among the recruiter (or runner), in some cases even the person whose identity was used. As estimated, the department might have suffered a loss on more than 1,5 million rands. At the centre of today’s takedown was the arrest of a 42-year-old office manager employed at Labour House in Bloemfontein. He is believed to be a key role player in facilitating the illegal operation, which cut across both the Free State and Gauteng provinces. The takedown operation, which began early this morning, marks only the beginning. Arrests are continuing in various towns across the Free State and at identified locations in Gauteng. The suspects, once apprehended, are expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 July 2025. The number of people expected to be arrested through this operation about twenty suspects. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commended the team for their dedication and precise execution of the operation. “It is high time that those who exploit government systems for personal enrichment are held accountable for their actions. I applaud our investigators for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to justice. This case serves as a warning that crime does not pay and that we will continue to dismantle criminal networks wherever they exist,” said Lieutenant General Motswenyane.
