Many parents feel like they have to hide their stress from their children. But children are incredibly perceptive. Even when they don't understand exactly what's happening, they often notice changes in your tone of voice, body language, facial expressions, and energy. They can sense that something feels different. When we try to pretend everything is fine, it can actually leave children feeling confused. They know something is off, but they don't have the language or context to understand what they're experiencing. Instead of hiding your emotions, model healthy ones. That might sound like, "I'm feeling a little frustrated today, but it's not because of you," or, "I'm having a stressful day, so I'm going to take a few deep breaths before we keep going." This teaches children something incredibly valuable: emotions aren't something to fear or suppress. They're a normal part of being human, and there are healthy ways to move through them. Children learn as much from who we are as from what we say. By naming our emotions calmly and demonstrating healthy coping strategies, we give children the tools to understand their own feelings—and the confidence that big emotions can be handled with honesty, calm, and care.
