Kristen Draime worried something wasn't quite right with her daughter Miley's left eye. It occasionally drifted, and many thought it was a lazy eye. Then one evening, after noticing a white glow in Miley's eye, Kristen started searching for answers. What she found led her to a diagnosis she had never heard of before: retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer primarily affecting children. Kristen read some parents first notice signs of retinoblastoma when one eye reflects differently in low light. She immediately checked on Miley through the baby monitor. One eye reflected normally. The other appeared completely black. The next morning, she covered Miley's healthy eye and knew something was wrong.

It was the most gut-wrenching feeling." After an emergency evaluation, Kristen and her husband, Andrew, learned Miley's left eye had been almost completely overtaken by a tumor. Under the care of ocular oncologist Dr. Arun Singh, Miley underwent surgery to remove the eye. "Retinoblastoma has the highest cure rate of any childhood cancer," says Dr. Singh. "Removing the eye is the most common treatment because leaving it intact risks letting the cancer spread to the brain or elsewhere in the body." Although her family hoped surgery would be enough, testing showed Miley would also need chemotherapy. "Chemotherapy helps eliminate any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of the cancer spreading," says pediatric hematologist-oncologist Dr. Stacey Zahler. In June, Miley rang the end-of-treatment Bravery Bell surrounded by family and caregivers. Today, she has a permanent prosthetic eye, attends dance class, plays hide-and-seek and does all the things a 3-year-old loves to do. "You wouldn't know she'd had her eye removed," Kristen says. "It's mind-blowing how well she’s doing. I just want her to be confident and know she's beautiful."
