I know a 798 that welds both ways they weld down hill during the summer month and weld up hill during winter to control heat

It’s faster and a production thing. The heat is rising and you can use way more heat welding down hand.

We weld 7018 low hydrogen uphill for filler and cap on high pressure lines.

I knew a guy who got fired because he welded up hill and the inspector told him , it isn’t allowed so the welder was fired

Neither of these are correct. Downhill is easier to control. If someone doesn't know what they are doing it's much easier to cause defects.
