Turning old clay into new, usable stuff, by way of spiral wedging. My workbench is relatively high, and typically, it helps you knead more efficiently if you raise yourself up and over the lump of clay that’s being worked, this way, you can use much of your upper body weight to press the clay down, rather than relying solely on the muscles in your arms and shoulders. If you’ve only got a small amount of clay, it isn’t as helpful, but when there’s a good few kilograms to wedge I often step on a few planks to give me a bit more height. This is reclaimed clay from trimming bowls. In those initial masses you see on the plaster batts, it’s aerated and crusty on the outside, as obviously the air can only get around the exteriors of these lumps. The process of wedging mixes all the hard and soft pieces of clay and gradually eliminates all the pockets of air inside, as they are stretched into a spiral that gets ever smaller and smaller. You’ll hear some of these pop as you work, but most disappear silently.
