Yesterday during Lunch with Friends, Drew Stroberg, Acting Forest Supervisor of the Superior National Forest, shared an important update on the future of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness following the recent wildfire closure. Today, the Forest Service announced a plan to begin reopening select portions of the BWCAW as soon as July 30, barring any significant wildfire activity over the weekend. A final decision and implementation announcement are expected July 27. The proposed Phase 2 reopening would restore overnight access at 37 of the 103 quota entry points and reopen approximately 424,231 acres, or 39% of the BWCAW, to the public. Forest officials continue to evaluate wildfire activity, weather conditions, and available resources daily. We also heard from business owners and community members at the edge of the wilderness about how the closure is affecting the region. Ginny Nelson, owner of Spirit of the Wilderness Outfitters in Ely; Sarah Jorgenson-Hallberg, owner of Java Moose in Grand Marais; and Ben Hoffman, Executive Director of YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, shared what they’re seeing on the ground and how visitors can continue to support local communities. Much of the region remains open and accessible.
