greenland sharks are the longest-living vertebrates on earth, and some may be over 400 years old. but how do scientists know that if nobody has been around long enough to watch one from birth? the answer is hidden in their eyes. unlike most sharks, greenland sharks don’t have hard body parts with growth rings that can be counted. instead, researchers study proteins found in the center of the shark’s eye lens. these proteins form before the shark is born and stay unchanged for its entire life. scientists use radiocarbon dating on those eye lens proteins. they measure levels of carbon-14, a naturally occurring radioactive form of carbon. because carbon-14 changes over time at a known rate, it can be used like a biological clock to estimate when the shark was born. researchers also use a unique carbon-14 signal left behind by atmospheric nuclear testing in the 1950s and 1960s. by comparing carbon levels in the eye lenses to this global timestamp, they can estimate the ages of sharks with surprising accuracy. using this method, scientists estimated that the largest greenland sharks in one study were around 335 to 392 years old, with the oldest potentially exceeding 500 years. that means some of these sharks may have been swimming the oceans since before modern science even existed. #greenlandshark #oceanfacts #marinelife #ScienceExplained #wildlife
