Bagram… a name that echoes through Afghanistan’s history. Located about 40 kilometers north of Kabul, in Parwan Province, it has always been a crossroads first for traders, later for armies. The airfield itself is vast. Its runways stretch for more than 3,000 meters, long enough to host the world’s largest aircraft. At its peak, it could house tens of thousands of troops, with hospitals, barracks, even its own small city inside the walls. The Soviets expanded Bagram in the late 1970s, making it their largest base in the country. After their withdrawal, it became contested ground, fought over during Afghanistan’s civil war. In 2001, Bagram rose again this time as the main U.S. and NATO hub in Afghanistan. For two decades, it was the heart of foreign operations: supplies flowed through, aircraft roared overhead, and decisions made there shaped the war beyond its walls. But in July 2021, the base was handed over, its gates closed quietly in the night. Empty hangars and abandoned buildings were left behind reminders of a long chapter in Afghanistan’s story. Today, Bagram has returned to the spotlight. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has argued it should never have been left, calling it strategically important. Afghan officials, however, have made clear that the base is part of Afghanistan’s sovereignty, and that no foreign military presence will return. And so Bagram stands: huge in size, rich in history, heavy with memory. It is more than a military base it is a symbol of how outside powers come and go, while Afghanistan endures. #pashtun_tajik_uzbak_hazara #usa #afghan #sovietunion #afghanistan
