Moo Deng's always been small, but a recent growth spurt made it more obvious that we were dealing with something unusual and so for the past few weeks, we've been quietly trying to figure out how to move forward. He's now on atenolol to slow down his heart. The idea is that reducing the pressure on his system would help alleviate some of the symptoms of his severe congenital heart disease. We're trying to get his heart rate down to 160 or lower. My type of anxiety manifests into having a well stocked clinic at @Meow Parlour so I imagine his cardiologist was very confused that I have a stethoscope that made a recording of his heart and I sent it to her as evidence that his heart rate was still at 174 after 10 days. She suggested that we increase his dose. Within two days, he was so much brighter and both @Simon Tung and I noticed that he was more active and playful than usual. None of this is curative. The vets I've asked have told me that every part of Moo Deng's heart has a defect. There's no surgical fix, we just have to monitor him and manage his symptoms. He's not going to have a long life, but we decided that in order to reduce his stress, he should spend the rest of the life he has with us. This is so unusual for us to have hospice cats at different ends of their lives so we are navigating having both Nuji and Moo Deng in our lives the best we can. Between us, Simon and I have so many responsibilities and are juggling many things, but what I've learned is that we're also capable of adjusting to the unexpected. So now we have a billion resident cats and we'll figure out how this impacts everything else we do as we go. Moo Deng started jumping on our shoulders again and whether my little parrot gets another 6 months or 5 years, I'm going to appreciate every bonus day that I get with Moo Deng. #fospice #fospicekitten #kitten #congenitalheartdisease
