There’s an app for your phone and it basically turns your phone into a light sensor. Could use it to see if there’s any leakage

Would have made sense to bury them. The black is going to heat the water inside which can possibly breed dangerous bacteria.

I saw on homestead rescue they put black painted drums similar to this in greenhouse. Maybe you could do similar?
