Preparing plates for glazing and firing, a process that begins with the flat dish being waxed. It’s raised up to make placing into the wheel, and lifting it away, easier, as the rim would otherwise be rather flush with the metal wheel-head and gripping it to pick the vessel back up ie extraordinarily hard. This simple solution works, although it helps to find a container/chuck that’s heavy, so it doesn’t slide around on the wheel. Next is glazing, which is relatively straightforward, I just had to make sure these fit into the buckets width wise and they just about do, just. In, out, then the form is taken by the waxes base and slid onto the ware board to dry. Simple. Lastly, there’s the tidying up. This is the trickiest part as the dried layer of glaze on the pot is very fragile and prone to chipping, so I work slowly and carefully. First, I delicately flip the plate upside down onto some foam on a banding wheel, then I use a scraper, knife and sponge to remove any last remaining drop of glaze that has settled on the wax and I make sure the border between glaze and clay is clean and neat, all the way around.
