I was glad to receive Jordan’s Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II at the Istana this morning. We last met when I visited Jordan in May 2023. Our countries have several things in common. Both small countries, both proudly multi-religious, both advocates for interfaith understanding. Jordan and Singapore co-sponsored the recent resolution at the United Nations General Assembly calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Crown Prince Al Hussein and I agreed on its urgency, to stop the immense loss of lives of Palestinian civilians, many of whom have been children. And the need to prevent famine and disease caused by the loss of hospitals and sanitation, and throttling of water, food and medicine allowed into Gaza - that even larger numbers could die from as the UN and independent organisations have warned. I expressed appreciation for Jordan’s active efforts to secure greater delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilian population. Crown Prince Al Hussein and I also agreed that the longer the war and more the deaths of civilians, the harder it will be to find a path to lasting peace. Both our countries have upheld the need for a negotiated two-state solution - that ensures security for both Israelis and Palestinians, and offers a young Palestinian population the hope of a normal future. Getting there will be a difficult and long journey, requiring active international engagement. But it is the only acceptable future – morally, and for the sake of ending a tragic history of violence. Singapore and Jordan are also strengthening our cooperation in other areas. We are happy to share our experience in technical education and water management. Our Singaporean students whom I met in Jordan last May, are keen to be pursuing their higher education in Islamic studies there. Jordan is also a beautiful country, with friendly and hospitable people. It has huge potential for growth of tourism, especially once peace is established in the region.
