The reason we get a bigger pot is because we need MORE soil so that the roots can grow deeper b/c they've outgrown the smaller pot.

I have three huge 5' containers and I do exactly this. I have so many empty gallons of milk in them. It only takes 1.5 bags of potting soil.

Now, I leave the bottom solid and make a hole on the side a cpl inches up. Placing 🪨, 🪵, natural charcoal, and straw for a mat. Semi self-water?
