To teach phonics well and be able to explain it to students we have to understand that two double letters in the middle of the word are telling us the first vowel is making the short sound. Students and teachers have to know what the short vowel sounds are. Then we can explain how those two double letters tell our eyes without a doubt the first #vowel is making the short sound. This is pretty easy to introduce for #reading. It gets a little trickier when students have to #write. They not only have to be thinking of the short vowel sound, but they also have to be noticing if they’re adding a vowel #suffix to a #CVC word. Teachers need to explain this well. #Teachers need to explain what’s going on with the vowel. Cutesy little tricks might help short term but for long-term retention and understanding of what’s really going on in our #language, we need to talk about how we are preserving the first short vowel. Also, we only double to keep a short vowel when the suffix added begins with a vowel. We would never teach all of this at one time. But if a teacher doesn’t understand it themselves, then they cannot adequately explain it to students when they have questions. #Phonics shows up in all grade levels. Thus all teachers need to understand these spelling conventions.
